Sheldon Lavin attended Roosevelt University, the University of Illinois, and Northwestern University. He studied business, accounting and finance and earned his bachelor’s degree. After completing his educational endeavors, he started a financial consulting firm in Chicago and helped to transform companies to large entities.
His first client was Otto & Sons, Inc. which is now OSI Group, a holding and private owned company. He built an empire including OSI Industries, OSI International Foods, OSI Vista, and OSI Food Solutions, to name a few. Today, Sheldon Lavin owns majority shares in OSI Group, LLC and its subsidiary enterprises in the US and 16 other countries.
The Beginning of OSI Group
Otto Kolschowshy came from Germany to the United States in the early 1900s and started a small family-owned business. He settled in Chicago and served the community in supplying goods and services from his meat market and butcher shop. Kolschowshy built strong relationships with his customers based on trustworthiness and friendly service. In the 1940s, his sons became inclusive in their father’s business which resulted in him naming his market and shop, Otto & Sons. The company continued to create existence in local communities and received a big break in 1955 after partnering with McDonald’s.
In 1970, Otto and Sons made an agreement with Sheldon Lavin to be their financial consultant to raise capital for expansion. In an interview on Inspirery, he said that “it takes money to make money”. The company needed funding to build a plant in West Chicago, expand to Germany, and to transition into a larger business. Otto & Sons changed its name to OSI Industries in 1975. From 1977 to the 1980s, Mr. Levin had enough funding to build plants in Utah and Spain.
After such global growth and partnerships, Sheldon Lavin purchased controlling interest of OSI Industries in the 1980s. He established OSI Group in 2004 and expanded the company further in global markets including Beijing, Shanghai, Asia-Pacific, and the Philippines. Without the capital and investment partners, OSI Group would not be one of the largest companies in the world. Lavin accomplished leading the company to number 63 on the 2018 Forbes List of America’s Largest Private Companies.
