Doe Deere: American Entrepreneur

Doe Deere was born in Russia. As a child, she used to dream of living in the United States of America. She was inundated with American culture and wanted to experience it firsthand herself. That dream came true when she was 17 years old. Doe, her mother, and sister moved to New York City.

New York was a culture shock to Doe and her family, from the sheer number of people to the busy hustle and bustle that never stopped. They learned that despite their good ethics and determination, it was difficult to survive in New York. Doe and her mother took on odd jobs, but even though they were working hard, the three women still ended up in a homeless shelter. They continued to work during this time, saving their meager earnings to get out of the hole they found themselves in.

Soon things began to look up. The family met a social worker who was able to help Doe’s mother get a job accounting and Doe and her sister into school. These steps allowed the women to finally move out of the homeless shelter and into the projects in East Harlem. Even though their new apartment was not luxurious by any means, Doe, her sister, and mother were grateful for the amenities it offered that could not be found in the homeless shelter. They had a kitchen and separate bedrooms, which was more than could be said for the shelter.

Thanks to the help from the social worker all those years ago, Doe Deere now owns her own cosmetic company, Lime Crime. Doe knew that coming to America and succeeding here would not be easy. She worked her way up from nothing and now knows firsthand the work it takes to achieve the American Dream. Reading Doe’s story should encourage all Americans that immigrants are an important part of what makes our country so amazing.
